Leading a Small Group – Basic Do’s & Don’ts

Small groups are a big part of our ministry here at thecreek. Leading a small group well is something that is learned. In this video Pastor Tomy will give you some good examples on how to lead a small group, things you should learn over time and what not to do while leading a small group. Here are a few of the key points he will be covering:

  • Key skills to learn:
    • Asking good follow-up questions to get students to open up and go deeper
    • Becoming a great listener (the goal ultimately is that the students end up doing the majority of talking)
      • Give them time to think – just because it’s silent in the room doesn’t mean it’s silent in their heads
      • When it is your turn to provide insight, be sure to speak in short summarizations and not sermons
    • Redirecting the conversation
    • Creating a safe atmosphere
      • Safe to ask any question
      • Safe to share without fear that personal stuff will get out
        • Set the tone by allowing yourself to be vulnerable when it’s appropriate and regularly remind them that was they share in group is sacred and shouldn’t be shared outside of that time together
