Crying at Drop Off
New parents can be nervous about handing their little one off in the nursery. We can ease their fears immediately by introducing ourselves and thanking them for bringing their child. Also, inform them of our call-out process. Tell them that we will work hard to help their child transition into the nursery. We will text them quickly if we are unable to console their child.
Crying During Services
Babies need warm one-to-one attention. Make sure you have good inward and outward responses when a child cries. Keep a good sense of humor and emphasize the positive.
Try the following:
- Talk to the child
- Point out pictures or videos in the room
- Rock the child
- Turn the lights down in the room
- Put on soothing music
- Offer a book or toy
- Offer a snack (only if approved by parent)
- Sing to the child
- Pray over the child
If a child will not be consoled after 10 minutes, text the parent and explain the situation. (Text Call-out Process is explained on a poster in each room.)
